English with Emma (“we”, “us”) offers free English lessons. This page explains what personal information we collect and how we use it. We keep it simple and collect as little as possible.

What we collect

  • Free eBook requests: your email address, your first name (if you give it), the date and time, which edition of the eBook you downloaded, and whether you agreed to receive emails from us.
  • Learning progress: lesson, quiz and vocabulary progress is saved only in your own browser on your device. We do not receive it.
  • Abuse prevention: to stop spam, we keep a scrambled (one-way) code made from your internet address for up to 24 hours. We cannot turn it back into your address.

How we use it

  • To give you the free eBook and count how many people download it.
  • Only if you ticked the box: to send you free English lessons, learning tips and occasional updates. If you did not tick the box, we will not add you to any mailing list.

The legal basis is our legitimate interest in providing the eBook you asked for and, for emails, your consent. We never sell your information.

Who can see it

Only the English with Emma administrator can see your details. They are stored securely with our website hosting provider. If we start using an email service in the future, we will share only the details of people who agreed to receive emails, for that purpose only.

How long we keep it

We keep your details until you ask us to delete them, or until we no longer need them.

Your rights

You can withdraw your consent to emails at any time, ask for a copy of your details, ask us to correct them, or ask us to delete them. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk).
